I/O Modules and Hardware
I/O Adapter Modules1747 I/O adapter modules allow 1746 I/O modules in a remote chassis to be controlled by SLC and PLC processors. SLC processors require a scanner module to reside in the local chassis in order for the remote communication to occur. The adapter module must reside in the left-most slot of the remote chassis and can interface to a maximum of 30 1746 I/O modules residing in up to three interconnected chassis. There are three 1746 I/O adapter modules: the 1747-ASB for remote I/O communication, the 1747-ACN15 for remote communication via ControlNet, and the 1747-ACNR15 for remote communication via ControlNet with redundant media port.

Chassis and Hardware
SLC modular chassis provide flexibility in system configuration. Four chassis sizes are available to suit your application needs. Choose from 4-slot, 7-slot, 10-slot, and 13-slot chassis based on your modular hardware component requirements.
The SLC 1746 modular chassis houses the processor or I/O adapter module and the I/O modules. A maximum of 3 chassis can be interconnected with chassis interconnect cables for a maximum of 30 module slots that can be addressed locally by a processor or I/O adapter in the left-most slot of the 3-chassis assembly.

- D/A and A/D conversions interface analog signals to data-table values
- Ladder logic has direct access to I/O values.
- Input modules, output modules, and combination input/output modules.
- A high level of resolution for accurate control in a broad range of analog applications.
- D/A and A/D conversions interface analog signals to data-table values
- Intelligent I/O modules are available to enhance your control system. These modules include a high-speed counter module, a BASIC language module, a motion control module, and communication modules. Each provides a unique easy-to-use interface between the I/O circuits (digital and/or analog) and the CPU.
This modular hardware design uses cost- and space-effective means to add I/O to your control system. These modules can be used:
- In a local I/O chassis of an SLC modular-hardware controller.
- At a location remote from the processor, in an I/O chassis with a 1747-ACN15 or -ACNR15 I/O adapter on a ControlNet link with the processor.
- At a location remote from the processor, in an I/O chassis with a 1747-ASB I/O adapter on a Universal Remote I/O link with the processor.
Benefits
- Hardware-platform sharing makes spare-parts stocking convenient.
- Combinations of input and outputs in the same digital and analog modules provide expansion capabilities without sacrificing space or increasing cost.
- Variety of voltages creates a precise power fit for your application.
- No need to disconnect wiring to replace module of 16 or more I/O; removable terminal blocks are shipped with I/O modules.
- Broad range of signal interfaces to AC and DC sensors/actuators for a wide variety of applications.
- LED indicators show input/output status for easier troubleshooting.
- Modules available in different densities (32 I/O per module max) for greater flexibility and cost savings.
- 1746 I/O modules include optical coupling and filter circuitry for signal noise reduction.
- A wide range of analog signal levels including standard analog inputs and outputs, and direct thermocouple and RTD temperature inputs.

| Description — The barrel temperature control module is an intelligent I/O module that can accommodate 4 heat/cool PID loops for temperature control applications. The module has 4 analog inputs, each of which functions as the controlled variable (C) input for a PID loop. The PID algorithm is performed on the module for each of the loops. The manipulated variable (M) output of each loop is sent from the module to the SLC processors data table as both a numeric value and as a time-proportioned output (TPO) signal. Your ladder logic can send either the M numeric value to an analog output module, or the TPO signal to a digital output module to close the loop. For very fast cut-off, your ladder logic can use the TPO signal transferred to the input image. The module provides auto-tuning of PID loops (optimized for tuning barrel temperature control loops), self-calibration (external reference required) self-diagnostics, and detection of input open-circuit (including thermocouple break). | ||||||

| Description — The 1746-QS module provides closed-loop synchronized positioning control of 4 hydraulic rams and lets you change motion parameters while the axis is moving. For each axis, the module accepts an input from a linear displacement transducer and provides a ±10V output to interface with proportional or servo valve amplifiers. The module is designed for use with the Hydraulic Configurator, a software product that you can obtain from the Allen-Bradley web site on the Internet. The Hydraulic Configurator is an interactive executable that lets you configure the module and tune its axes. The Hydraulic Configurator saves considerable time when troubleshooting or tuning axes. Applications include: plywood presses, roll positioning, palletizers and stackers, forges, and hydraulic tailgate loaders. | |||||||
| 1746-QV⋆ Open-Loop Velocity Control Module |
1 linear displacement transducer | 160 inches at 0.01-inch resolution | 1 analog output (0…10V DC or ±10V DC) |
2 ms | 1 | 215 mA at 5V DC | 1746-RT27 (input) 1746-RT26 (output) |
| Description — The 1746-QV module is part of an SLC-based open-loop control system for controlling the speed and placement of a hydraulic ram. The module accepts motion profiles that you program into the SLC processor and monitors an input from a linear displacement transducer. The SLC processor sends to the module a pair of extend and retract profiles that define when to accelerate or decelerate hydraulic motion. This ability to program these changes of speed reduces cycle time and reduces or eliminates pressure spikes and water-hammering for smoother operation and less wear and tear on the machine. This also saves energy and enables faster new-part change-over. The module fits simple hydraulic applications including simple hydraulic presses, die-casting machines, and weld-head placement. The module provides OEMs and system integrators with a less complex way to match hydraulic cylinder pressure or speed with application requirements. | |||||||

Removable Terminal Blocks
Many 1746 I/O modules provide color-coded removable terminal blocks. These removable terminal blocks let you replace I/O modules without rewiring. A matching color band on the front of the module helps you match the terminal block to the correct type of module. Each terminal block includes self-lifting pressure plates for secure wiring and has barriers on 3 sides to guard against AC cidental shorting of wiring.
