ControlLogix System Overview
The ControlLogix system provides discrete, drives, motion, process, and safety control together with communication and state-of-the-art I/O in a small, cost-competitive package. The system is modular, so you can design, build, and modify it efficiently - with significant savings in training and engineering.
System Components
ControlLogix system components include:
| Component | Description |
| ControlLogix Controllers | Options include: ControlLogix standard controllers, GuardLogix safety controllers, and ControlLogix-XT extended temperature controllers. User memory ranges from 2 to 32 MB, depending on controller type. |
| ControlLogix Communication Modules | Options include: EtherNet/IP, ControlNet, DeviceNet, Data Highway Plus, Remote I/O, Foundation Fieldbus, Serial, DH-485, and SynchLink. Install multiple communication-interface modules into the ControlLogix backplane to configure a gateway to bridge or route control and information data between different networks. |
| ControlLogix Integrated Motion Modules | Choose from SERCOS or analog interface modules. A removable terminal block (RTB) is required for analog interface modules only. |
| ControlLogix I/O Modules | Options include: digital, analog, thermocouple, RTD, motion, and specialty modules. Densities range from 4 to 32 points per module. Modules are rate IP20, Class I, Division 2/Zone 2. Some modules have field-side diagnostics, electronic fusing, or individually isolated inputs/outputs. A remote terminal block (RTB) or wiring system is required for each I/O module. |
| ControlLogix Power Supplies | ControlLogix power supplies are used with the 1756 chassis to provide 1.2V, 3.3V, 5V, and 24V DC power directly to the chassis backplane. Select one power supply for each chassis, if you are using standard power supplies. Select a power supply bundle if you are planning a redundant power supply system. |
| ControlLogix Chassis | Choose from ControlLogix standard or ControlLogix-XT chassis. Standard chassis are available with 4, 7, 10, 13, or 17 slots. ControlLogix-XT chassis are available with 5 or 7 slots. Slot fillers are required for empty slots. |
Optional system components include:
| Component | Description |
| Operator Interface and Computers | Our HMI and computer products, together with Logix for control and NetLinx architecture for communication, make up the Rockwell Automation Integrated Architecture strategy. Choose from PanelView Plus and PanelView Plus CE electronic operator interface and Rockwell Automation industrialized personal computer hardware. Available Rockwell Software supervisory control software includes FactoryTalk View software. |
| Software | Your selection of modules and network configuration determines what software packages you need to configure and program your system. Program your ControlLogix system with RSLogix 5000 Enterprise Series software. Additional design and configuration products include RSNetworx and RSLinx software. |
Standard ControlLogix System
A simple ControlLogix system consists of a standalone controller and I/O modules in a single chassis. For a more comprehensive system, use:
- multiple controllers in a single chassis.
- multiple controllers joined across networks.
- I/O in multiple platforms that is distributed in many locations and connected over multiple I/O links.

ControlLogix-XT System
The ControlLogix-XT controllers function in the same way as the traditional ControlLogix controllers. The ControlLogix-XT products include control and communication system components that, when used with FLEX I/O-XT products, provide a complete control system solution that can be used in environments where temperatures range from ‑20...70 °C (‑4...158 °F).
When used independently, the ControlLogix-XT system can withstand environments where the temperature ranges from ‑25...70 °C (‑13...158 °F).
GuardLogix Safety System
A GuardLogix controller is a ControlLogix controller that also provides safety control. The GuardLogix system is a dual controller solution — you must use a 1756-L6xS primary controller and a 1756-LSP safety partner to achieve SIL 3 and Cat. 4/PLe. A major benefit of this system is that its still a single project, safety and standard together. The safety partner controller is a part of the system, is automatically configured, and requires no user setup.
For additional information see Safety Programmable Controllers, GuardLogix Integrated Safety System .
| Application | Description |
| SIL 3 | The GuardLogix controller system is type-approved and certified for use in safety applications up to and including SIL 3 according to IEC 61508, and applications up to and including category (CAT) 4, according to EN954-1. For more information, see: GuardLogix Controllers Systems Safety Reference Manual, publication 1756-RM093. GuardLogix Controllers User Manual, publication 1756-UM020. GuardLogix Safety Application Instruction Set Reference Manual, publication 1756-RM095. |
| SIL 2 | Components of the ControlLogix system are type-approved and certified for use in SIL 2 applications, according to IEC 61508, and AK4 applications according to DIN V19250. For a list of ControlLogix system components that meet SIL 2 requirements, see Using ControlLogix in SIL 2 Applications Safety Reference Manual, publication 1756-RM001. |

ControlLogix Enhanced Redundancy System
The ControlLogix controller supports redundancy. Redundancy enables higher productivity by providing higher system availability by switching control to a secondary controller chassis if the primary redundancy module detects an event on any module in the primary chassis.
ControlLogix firmware version 19.50 provides enhanced redundancy for high-availability applications. See the Rockwell Automation Support site for details on downloading the firmware bundle (V19.52Enh). ControlLogix Redundancy v19.50 adds support for:
- ControlLogix L7 controllers
- ControlLogix Redundancy module, 1756-RM Series B
- Ethernet/IP I/O in a ControlLogix redundancy system
- EtherNet/IP Ring (DLR) topology
- Alarms and Events support for redundant HMIs
