Round Media for DeviceNet

Bulletin 1485C Round Media

Rockwell Automation offers two types of round media for DeviceNet: thick and thin. Thick media, with a 1/2-inch (12.2mm) diameter gray PVC jacket, is primarily used as the trunk line on the DeviceNet network. Thin media, with its 1/4-inch (6.9mm) yellow CPE or gray PVC jacket, can be used either as the trunk line or as the drop cable that connects the trunk line to each field device. Each is available either on spools or in a variety of pre-terminated lengths, with custom lengths also available to fit specific application needs.

Pre-terminated cables for use with ArmorBlock MaXum I/O are also available. These cordsets provide connection to both I/O and power and are available in a variety of lengths and connecting configurations.

DevicePort™ Multi-Port Tap

DevicePort taps are passive splitters which connect multiple network devices to the DeviceNet trunk in less physical space than multiple T-port taps, reducing the number of physical taps on the trunk line from as many as eight to just one. DevicePort taps are available as either thru-trunk versions, which connect directly to the trunk line, or dropconnector versions, which interface to the trunk through a single T-port tap. They are offered with 4, 6, or 8 mini or micro connector ports in sealed enclosures for application flexibility.

T-Port Coupler
Sealed to an enclosure rating of NEMA 6P, the T-port connects in-line to the trunk cable using two mini connectors and attaches a drop cable via a right or left keyway connector for maximum positioning flexibility.

KwikLink™ Flat Media System

KwikLink is the quickest, easiest way to get connected with DeviceNet. A physical media system consisting of flat cable and snap-on modular connectors, it can save you as much as 50% over the cost of installing other DeviceNet media. Thats because you dont have to use predetermined trunk lengths, so youre free to put drops wherever you need them. Other advantages include:

  • Insulation displacement connectors eliminate the need to cut or strip cable to make a secure trunk connection
  • Sealed connectors feature IP67, NEMA 6P, NEMA 13 and 1200psi washdown enclosure ratings
  • Modular design allows you to mix and match to create the wiring version you need
  • Inherent noise resistance due to the low loss, low capacitance, well-balanced KwikLink cable and DeviceNets differential type of transmission
  • Installation flexibility saves time and wastes less material, making this the lowest-cost DeviceNet media option

Bulletin 1485T and 1485P KwikLink Connectors
The KwikLink connector consists of two main components. An insulation displacement connector (IDC) module clamps onto the flat cable trunk line, piercing the cable insulation. Next, an interface module snaps on top of the IDC module to provide your choice of connection style to the trunk. Each insulation displacement connector module comes with one of six interface module styles:

  • Micro connector
  • Open style with screw terminals (often used in enclosures)
  • Terminating resistors
  • Integral drop cable (pigtail) with pre-wired mini-connector
  • Integral drop cable (pigtail) with flying leads
  • Blank (to seal unused connectors)

Bulletin 1485P KwikLink Splice Kits
Rated for 8A at 24V DC (Class 1), these kits come with everything you need to join sections of flat media, including a pair of snap-on KwikLink modules factory-joined with Class 1 round cable, two IDC connector bases, and two flat cable end caps. The KwikLink splice kit is compatible with all three available styles of flat cable and provides quick and easy installation at the user site when shipping a system in small sections. Sealed (IP67) and unsealed (IP40) kits are available, as well as a power isolation version to allow separation of power supplies along the network trunk line.

Bulletin 1485C KwikLink Cable

This specialized flat media's asymmetric profile helps prevent incorrect assembly of connectors to the cable. KwikLink cable is available with either TPE or PVC jacketing and in class 1 and class 2 rated versions.

Bulletin 1485K KwikLink Drop Cables
These PVC-jacketed, 4-wire drop cables are designed for use exclusively with the KwikLink flat media system. Each attaches to the trunk using a micro-style KwikLink connector and is available with a mini connector, micro connector or flying leads on the device end.

Bulletin 1792 I/O on KwikLink
ArmorBlock MaXum I/O on DeviceNet takes full advantage of the KwikLink flat media system's benefits. The entire system is rated IP67 and NEMA 4X, allowing you to reduce or eliminate the number of enclosures or trays necessary to protect either the media or the block. The KwikLink flat cable passes directly through the MaXum block, minimizing the space needed to mount the block to your machinery. With ArmorBlock, the IDC connection is included, so there are no extra taps required.
