Fault Number: 08
Fault Display: Overtemp Fault
Fault Name: Overtemp Fault
Description: Heatsink temperature exceeded a predefined value of 90°C (195°F).
Corrective Action: There are several things to look at when troubleshooting an overtemp fault.
The first item to check is if the fan is operational. On smaller drives where there is access to the top of the drives, air should be felt blowing upwards from the fan below. If at all possible, listen to the fan also, and make sure it sounds as though it is running smoothly. In all frame drives, use extreme caution when feeling for airflow from the fan.
The second item to check is the condition of the heatsink and fan. In some environments, dust will accumulate on the fans fins and in the heatsink. Using compressed air will usually break most dust collections free. Removal of the drive may be necessary to gain better access to the heatsink for a more thorough cleaning in harsher environments.
The third item to check will be the thermistor itself. In B-frame and higher drives, the thermistor is screwed directly into the heatsink towards the center and top of the heatsink. A continuity test will reveal a faulty thermistor. Complete removal or circumvention of the thermistor will result in the drive giving a Fault 55 (Temp Sense Open).
