Updating System DLL Files If Windows® 98/98SE Fails to Load After Installing DriveExplorer™ Version 3.01.06

Introduction:
Important: The Microsoft® Internet Explorer Version 5.0 that is installed with the Windows® 98/98SE operating system is NOT compatible with DriveExplorer™ software.

The intention of this procedure is to assist the user in the following areas...

  • Regain access to their computer from the MS-DOS prompt
  • Update critical system DLL files
  • Successfully load their Windows® 98/98SE operating system
  • Upgrade to Microsoft® Internet Explorer Version 6.0

Getting Started
Since your computer’s operating system is inaccessible at this time, the following tasks will need to be performed on a different PC running Windows® 98/98SE. You will need to detach the supplied WIN98SHDLL.zip file to a
temporary folder on your hard drive. Next you will need to browse to the zip file in your temporary folder and extract all of the DLL files to a 3.5-inch floppy diskette. When the file transfer is complete, you should have the following three files on your diskette...

  • Shscrap.dll
  • Shlwapi.dll
  • Shfolder.dll

Once you have verified all three files are on the diskette, remove the diskette from your floppy drive and put it aside. You will need the diskette later in the procedure.

Installing DLL Files
At this time please shut down/reboot the computer that will NOT load the Windows® 98/98SE operating system while pressing and holding down the Ctrl key. This will take you into the Windows® 98/98SE Boot Menu which will look similiar to the screen below:

Select the option for Safe mode command prompt only. Then insert the floppy diskette that contains the three DLL Files. At the C:\> prompt, type the following command:

  • A:\
  • You will arrive at the A:\> prompt which will allow you to access data from your floppy diskette.
  • copy *.dll c:\windows\system
  • Press the Enter key. MS-DOS may prompt you with the following message: Overwrite c:\windows\system\SH*.DLL? (Yes/No/All):
  • Press the A key to update all three files on your hard drive.

Remove the floppy diskette from your floppy drive and restart your computer.

Updating Microsoft® Internet Explorer
Once your computer has loaded the Windows® 98/98SE operating system you will need to update your Microsoft® Internet Explorer software via one of the following methods...

  • Windows Update
Your Windows® 98/98SE operating system uses the Windows® Update feature with which the user can automatically update Windows by clicking the Windows Update icon in the Start menu.
