Product Advisories: Intermittent Network Communication Loss when using 20-COMM-E DPI EtherNet/IP Adapters

Date: August 2005 Ref: CPAG 2005-08-002

The purpose of this Product Service Advisory is to inform you of a potential issue that exists with the following communication adapter and firmware version:

Communication Adapter

Series Level(s) / Firmware Version(s)

20-COMM-E

Series B / Firmware Version 3.001

This Product Service Advisory explains the issues and the steps being taken to correct the issue. Due to the nature of the problem, this effort has been assigned a Type II Mandatory Product Service Advisory.

Problem Description

When a 20-COMM-E DPI EtherNet/IP adapter is installed in a PowerFlex 700S drive, or in a PowerFlex 700 drive with the Vector Control option operating at a DPI data rate of 500 kbps, intermittent communication faults may occur.

Faults codes that may be exhibited by the specific drive are:

Drive

Fault

PowerFlex 700S

F53 – [ DPI Loss Port 5]

F59 – [Net Loss DPI P5]

PowerFlex 700VC

F75 – [Port 5 Adapter]

F85 – [Port 5 DPI Loss]

Drive faults are more likely to occur when the 20-COMM-E adapter is configured to use Datalinks. When the fault occurs, the 20-COMM-E adapter will go into flash mode, become inoperable, and its MOD and NET A LEDs will simultaneously flash red. To clear the fault, the user must power cycle or reset the drive.
