  • The suspect fan transformer can be identified by transformer part #LS-A15130-PT-A. The transformer is located at the bottom of the drive as described below.

The transformer can be found at the bottom of the drive behind an access panel. Remove all power from the drive, and wait 5 minutes before attempting to disconnect or service the drive. Prove zero volts across the bus, incoming power, and output power before continuing. Remove R, S, and T, and then remove the three screws holding the access panel. The transformer is visible after removing this cover.

Issue Description
With the PowerFlex 700 Frame 5 and PowerFlex 700S Frame 5, hereafter referred to as PowerFlex 700/700S drives, the following functional issue exists:
Functional Issue – Frame 5 Fan Transformer Failures
PowerFlex 700/700S Frame 5 AC input drives have experienced fan transformer failures with transformer part #LS-A15130-PT-A. If the transformer fails, the fan will cease operation and the drive may experience heatsink over-temperature faults. When the transformer fails, an ionization occurs that may cause additional failures or damage within the drive. The issue can be avoided with an alternate fan transformer.

Temporary Workarounds
There is no temporary workaround for this issue. Drives may continue to operate with the transformer part #LS-A15130-PT-A, however, the failure of this part may cause drive damage beyond the transformer.

Issue Correction
The functional issue described above has been corrected in the following versions of the PowerFlex 700 and PowerFlex 700S drives and spare parts kit: PowerFlex 700 and PowerFlex 700S Frame 5 drives (with catalog numbers noted above) shipped on or after September 1, 2006. Frame 5 Fan Transformer Spare Part Kit # SK-G9-XFMR3-F5.

Any PowerFlex 700 or PowerFlex 700S Frame 5, AC Input drive with one of the catalog numbers noted above that has transformer part #LS-A15130-PT-A should have the transformer replaced. Kit # SP-337035-A01 includes the replacement component and instructions.
