Fault Number : 7

Fault Display : Motor Overload

Fault Name : Motor Overload

Fault Type : 1 - Auto-Reset Run & 3 - User Configurable

Fault Description : Internal electronic overload trip.

Corrective Action : This fault can be enabled / disabled by using [Fault Config 1] parameter.

This is turned on by fault config 1 parameter 238 bit 3. This is turned on by factory default. If you do not want to be notified of this fault, set bit 3 to a zero.

This fault is caused by an excessive motor load on the output of the drive. This is based off of the motor nameplate full load amps. Make sure that parameter 42 [Motor NP FLA] is set to your motors actual full load amperage. This can be caused by example a coupling or belt that slips where the load drops off, then suddenly is applied. This will cause a large spike in load current.

For single motor applications the drive can be programmed to protect the motor from overload conditions. An electronic thermal overload I2T function emulates a thermal overload relay. This operation is based on
three parameters; parameter 42 [Motor NP FLA], parameter 48 [Motor OL Factor] and parameter 47 [Motor OL Hertz] (parameters 042, 048 and 047, respectively).

Parameter 42 [Motor NP FLA] is multiplied by parameter 48 [Motor OL Factor] to allow the user to define the continuous level of current allowed by the motor thermal overload. Parameter 47 [Motor OL Hertz] is used to allow the user to adjust the frequency below which the motor overload is derated.

The motor can operate up to 102% of FLA continuously. If the drive had just been activated, it will run at 150% of FLA for 180 seconds. If the motor had been operating at 100% for over 30 minutes, the drive will run at 150% of FLA for 60 seconds. These values assume the drive is operating above parameter 47 [Motor OL Hertz], and that parameter 48 [Motor OL Factor] is set to 1.00.

Operation below 100% current causes the temperature calculation to account for motor cooling.

Parameter 47 [Motor OL Hertz] defines the frequency where motor overload capacity derate should begin. The motor overload capacity is reduced when operating below parameter 47 [Motor OL Hertz]. For all settings of parameter 47 [Motor OL Hertz] other than zero, the overload capacity is reduced to 70% at an output frequency of zero.

Parameter 42[Motor NP FLA] is multiplied by parameter 48 [Motor OL Factor] to select the rated current for the motor thermal overload. This can be used to raise or lower the level of current that will cause the motor thermal overload to trip. The effective overload factor is a combination of parameter 47 [Motor OL Hertz] and parameter 48 [Motor OL Factor].
