RSLinx PowerFlex Drive Firmware Flashing Procedure

  1. Open RSLinx, from the file menu, select "Communications", then "Configure Drivers".

  2. In the Available Driver Types, Select "AB_DF1-1 DH+", then select "Configure".

  3. In the configure screen, make sure your comm port is set for the proper serial port your 1203-SSS is plugged into. The rest of the settings are fine at default. You may want to make sure the baud rate is atleast 19,200, otherwise your flash procedure will take an extremely long time. If you need help with the other Configure settings, refer to the 1203-SSS manual for more in-depth information.

  4. Hit "ok" to close the Configure window. Hit "close" on the Configure Drivers window. You can now minimize RSLinx.
  5. If you do not already have a ControlFlash file, now would be the time to go get one off of the Web Updates site. Save the ControlFlash to your hard drive somewhere, perhaps on your desktop. Double click to start up the ControlFlash file. Hit "Next", "Accept" the license agreement, then "Next" again to allow the ControlFlash program to install on your machine. Hit "Yes", then "Next", then "Yes" again, making sure the checkbox is ticked to start ControlFlash when done.

  6. Now that ControlFlash is started (If you did not start it from the setup program, it can be started using "Start Menu"), Hit "Next" on the welcome screen.

  7. The drive that you are hooked to should show up when you click the plus symbol under "AB_DF1-1, Data Highway Plus". Click once to highlight the drive you need to flash. The drive should show up as an AB DPI device or an AB meatball image. Hit "Ok"

  8. The drives current revision are shown, as well as the revision of the flash file. The flash file firmware should be newer than the current firmware revision number. Click "Next".

  9. Now make sure the firmware revisions are what you are expecting, then click "Finish".

Do NOT break the connection to the drive, or remove power from the drive or computer while the flash procedure is taking place. Doing so may destroy your drive, and will invalidate your warranty.
  10. The fan on the drive should shut off, and firmware flashing will commence. The STS light on the drive will blink yellow. The 1203-SSS RX and TX lights will both blink rapidly. The drive will display "Flash Download In Progress". The flashing procedure can take up to 10 minutes PER drive at 38,400 baud. Flashing time depends on baud rate. i.e. 19,200 baud will take twice as long as 38,400 baud.

  11. The drive will reset itself when the flash procedure is done.
