Updating Firmware with Hyperterminal on the PowerFlex Drive

If any errors come up in Hyper Terminal with flashing the drive. Download the last release of Hyper Terminal from the web at http://www.hilgraeve.com

  1. Shut down RSlinx completely. Open HyperTerminal. You will be prompt to name this file, you can name it whatever you like, as the name is unimportant to flashing the drive.

  2. Choose the comport that your 1203-SSS Anacanda is connected to.

  3. Remove the HIM module from the drive.

  4. Under Com Properties / Port settings set the following
    • Bits per sec to whatever the Anacanda is set to (9600 is default, 38400 is common). You can also change the Anacanda's bit rate using HyperTerminal. See the Anacanda's user manual for more information.
    • Data bits: 8 (default)
    • Parity: None (default)
    • Stop bits: 1 (default)
    • Flow Control: None

    Press OK

  5. Press the Enter key, and the following display menu should appear:

  6. Select Option 3 (Flash Upgrade)

  7. Select Option 0 (Zero) to flash the PowerFlex 700 VC drive.

  8. Press "Y" to continue. C’s will start to appear after the (Y/N) prompt, indicating it is ready for software transfer. You will have one minute to start the firmware transfer. If transfer is not started in one minute you will have to start back at Step 1 of the instructions.  Before restarting Step 1 the drive power will have to be cycled and HyperTerminal restarted.

  9. Now select "Transfer" from the File menu, and then "Send File" from the Transfer menu.

  10. Set the Protocol to "X-Modem". Then press the "Browse" button. You will need to find the firmware ".bin" file on your computer.

  11. After you have browsed to find the file, click on the send button to begin the firmware file transfer.

  12. HyperTerminal will now send the firmware file to the drive. You will see a progress indicator showing status of the file transfer. This process will take some time. It is very important that the transfer does not get interrupted. The STS light on the drive should flash yellow until flash of Application Code is done.

  13. Once the file transfer is done, HyperTerminal should show that everything completed successfully.

Note: It is possible that this screen never gets displayed. If you do not see this display, hit enter on the computer to get back to step 2. If HyperTerminal appears to be locked up, cycle power to the 1203-SSS, and hit enter on HyperTerminal.

Note: If you do not get this screen on the computer and the LCD displays “System Error – This Product Is Incompatible With The Host”, cycle power to the drive.

  14. Your flash is finished, you can now close HyperTerminal. Cycle power to the drive.

  15. You can now reinstall the HIM module onto the drive, and continue on to reprogramming the drive. There is a knowledgebase document that covers reprogramming the drive. That document can be found here: G154752374 - Flash Upgrade Procedure for the PowerFlex 700VC Series B to Firmware 4.005
